Standing on the border between England and Scotland Norham has had a tempestuous past. The village is dominated by its twelfth-century castle which was in the front line of cross border conflict for over five centuries. In quieter times the castle became famous as the subject of several paintings by JMW Turner. Sir Walter Scott sent the hero of his novel “Marmion” to Norham because it was regarded as the most dangerous place in England.
Norham is now a peaceful and classically picturesque village. Unlike so many rural communities nowadays, it still has a thriving school, a wide variety of local clubs and associations, pubs, excellent shops and a strong community spirit.
